As most of you must be aware that solar eclipse will be on 15th of January this year . There will be two solar eclipse.

The first one will be on 15th Jan. Astrologically this will affect the zodiac - Capricorn. So people having this zodiac should offer prayers and donate as per their desire to nullify the effect of this eclipse.

This eclipse will be visible in Africa, Kenya, Somalia,South East Europe, Middle East, India ,
Sri Lanka, China and other parts of south East Asia etc.

Sun enters the zodiac Virgo on 16th Sept. It gets conjunct with Saturn and Mercury which is retro grate. This might bring a bad effect on many. Lunar Eclipse on August 6th, 2009

Tonight, across most of the United States, star-gazers will be able to see the a rare lunar eclipse. This will be the second lunar eclipse of the summer and a series of 5 eclipses this year. I wonder if that is a lot or not? It seems like it to me. You can see the path of the eclipse.

So, what exactly is a lunar eclipse as opposed to a solar eclipse, etc.? A lunar eclipse happens when the moon passes behind the Earth blocking the suns rays. The earth, moon and sun have to be aligned very closely so that the earth is in the middle, thus causing the effect.

Astrologers have traditionally thought ill of the lunar eclipse. Since the lunar cycles supposedly impact our emotions and thought processes, any disruption to that cycle is thought to be bad. They are a bad omen and (it’s thought) tends to lead to domestic strife, especially amongst women (I’m not making this up, I swear).

I believe that just about anyone in the United States who is east of the Rocky Mountains will be able to enjoy this somewhat rare occasion. I plan on taking my kids outside to have a glimpse if possible. I always enjoy teaching the kids something about science, especially if they might just sit down and shut up for 10 seconds. Did I say that out loud? In any event, enjoy the lunar eclipse and may it not portend your doom!

will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in
the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9
and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide.

Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye.
Mars will be easy to spot.
At the beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10p.m.
and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m.

By the end of August when the two planets are
closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its
highest point in the sky at 12:30a.m. That’s pretty
convenient to see something that no human being has seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at
the beginning of August to see Mars grow
progressively brighter and brighter throughout the
month.

FULL MOON DAY TODAY - KARTIK SNAN ( BATH ) DAY !

The Full Moon Day falling today i.e. 15th Nov,08 called in hindu mythology as Kartik Purnima. Karthika Pournami is the most auspicious day to worship Lord Shiva, next only to the Maha Shivaratri. Karthika pournami is also called as Tripuri Purnima or Dev Diwali (Diwali of Gods).
Full moon day bath in the river, tank or on a well in the month of Magh (January-February) Baisakh (April-May) and Kartik (October-November) is recognized as more auspicious and especially, so if it is in Kurukshetra, Ayodhya or Kasi. Women observe fast, eating meal once a day throughout the month of Kartik till the full moon day of Kartik. The benevolence of the fast and bath lies in the destruction of all sins and their effect. This day is also important because on this day, God Siva killed the demon Tripura. This demon undertook severe austerities for a very long period at Parayag (Allahabad). Gods apprehending his likely gain of power, tried their best to interrupt his asceticism but in vain. Ultimately Brahma was pleased and awarded him a boon that he would not die at the hands of a god or man. Having obtained this boon, he started inflicting atrocities on all and ultimately attacked Siva’s abode Kailasa. Siva gave him fight and ultimately with the help of Brahma and Vishnu killed Tripura on this day, the full moon day of Kartik (October-November).

The Sonepur (Bihar) fair steeped in mythology and folklore, begins on first full moon day of Kartik Purnima after Deewali, and stretches over an entertaining fortnight. It is a fantastic cattle fair perhaps the largest is Asia. Apart from the sale of livestock and grains, there are numerous contests of skill, magic shows and folk performances to draw crowds.

Every year during Kartik Purnima (October-November) a 10-day fair is held in Pushkar (near Ajmer). After bathing, the pilgrims offer Puja at the Brahma temple (the only one in the world). Worship is also done in Savitri temple on the hill, where image of Saraswati exists.

The Baliyatra at Cuttack on the Kartik Purnima day in October-November is a memorable event in Orissa. It is in memory of the traders, who had set sail for the islands of Bali, Java and Sumatra in older days. People go to the river Mahanadi, bath and sail tiny boats of pith and paper, from day break till late in the evening. A huge fair is held on the riverbank in front of the Barabati fort for four days.

Karthik Purnima festival also coincides with the Jains’ Light Festival and Guru Purab (Jayanthi of Guru Nanak Dev).

When is Kartik Poornima in 2008 ?
Kartik Poornima is celebrated on the Full Moon day or the fifteenth day of the Shukla paksha (first fortnight) of the month, Karthik. In 2008, Karthik poornima falls on 13th November, Thursday.

Legend Behind Karthik Purnima :
One of the great sacred texts, Mahabharata demonstrates the story behind the holiness of Karthik purnima. According to that, demon Taraka was killed by Kartikeya (Lord Shiva’s son). Tarakasura’s three sons – Taraksha, Kamalaksha and Vidyunmali. Usually demons are very intelligent and strong but they misuse their knowledge and powers.

These three demons performed a severe penance for Brahma and got a boon that they would live for thousand years in three strong, moving cities called as Tripuri and they could only be destructed by an arrow which makes the cities into one and sets them to fire.

After the end of thousand years of the negative rule of the three demons, the Gods went to Lord Shiva and prayed to him to demolish the asuras. Lord Shiva performed ‘Rudra Tandava’ (Dance of Lord Shiva which is like an earthquake and also known as ‘Dance of Destruction’). ‘Rudra Tandava’ rocked the three cities – ‘Tripuri’. Lord Shiva’s arrow pierce through the three asuras at a time and the fire from his third eye burnt ‘Tripuri’.

As a commemoration of the demolition of the demons which occured on the Full Moon day, the event is celebrated as Karthik Purnima or Tripuri Poornima. Kartik pournami is also called as Dev Diwali as it is a brighter day for the Gods who fought against the demons to destroy the evil powers of them.

Rituals and Customs of Karthik Purnima :
On the day of Kartik Purnima, devotees perform ceremonial bath in the early morning and worship Lord Shiva. In South India, devotees burn a small bundle of cotton threads which are called as ‘Vatthulu’, which represents the burning of evilness in the world.

Women light ‘Deepaks’ (Kartik Deepams) in the evening and they perform a ritual of leaving those deepaks in nearest pond or lake.

Samudra Snan (Ritualistic bath) and Vanabhojanams (garden parties) are the popular rituals throughout India.

According to one theory Diwali may have originated as a harvest festival, marking the last harvest of the year before winter. In an agrarian society this results in businessmen closing accounts, and beginning a new accounting year. The deity of wealth in Hinduism, goddess Lakshmi is therefore thanked on this day and everyone prays for a good year ahead. This is the common factor in Diwali celebrations all over the Indian subcontinent.
